We believe that the arts engage our pupils and provides exciting opportunities for our children to develop their social skills and cultural understanding. All children have opportunities both in the curriculum and in extra-curricula activities to participate in visual art, dance, music, drama and creative writing. We pride ourselves on our provision and the fantastic opportunities we provide. We are an Arts Mark silver school and in addition, we are also Arts Award registered and look to encourage more children to complete the Discover and Explore award in the future after some of our year three children successfully achieved the Discover award last term.
During each term, every child receives explicit art sessions with Mrs Lockwood as well as art sessions with class teachers. Evidence of our children's learning is shown though the fantastic displays around our school. During the course of the year, children will get to experience 6 different strands of visual art; drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D. We have also been fortunate to work with some amazing artists from our local community and these are evident the school, from stained glass windows, cardboard sculptures and our most recent addition - our vibrant new playground mural, which we worked in partnership with local muralist and illustrator, Catalina Carvajal!
We have a very strong core of performing arts that runs right through the school. Each year group has a term of explicit performing arts lessons a year. Within these lessons, Mrs Hart and Mrs Miller teach progressive music, drama and dance skills that align with the national curriculum guidance for our students. Additional performing arts opportunities from the year 3 annual Christmas production, end of school year 6 production to the talent show celebrate and showcase our children’s talents! We host of performing arts clubs throughout the year and alongside her and we are lucky enough to work with community dance artist Sam Moss who delivers bespoke dance lessons for year 3, designed around our curriculum.
We have a dedicated music teacher, Mrs Hart, and each child receives music lessons as well as the opportunity for 1:1 music tuition. The children’s achievements are celebrated during our Christmas and Easter concerts and our choirs perform regularly in the community throughout the year. Mrs Hart also runs different choirs and these often perform in the community and further afield.
Writing across the school is inspired by a range of different stimulus - from film to artwork to cross curricular links that develop understanding and empathy for others. Our gifted and talented writers are able to fine tune their writing in weekly workshops with the local author, Fred Sedgewick whom we hope to welcome back to the school soon..
