Autumn 1st 2023
Year 4 children have had a busy term settling in to their new classes and working hard.
In maths lessons, we have been consolidating our understanding of place value as well as practising
times tables daily. Well done to all those pupils who have been regularly completing their TTRS
homework. This is a great way to support your learning.
In literacy, we have looked at poems, persuasive writing and are now learning how to write a diary
entry. Following a virtual trip to West Stow, the children have been writing a creative diary entry
about the trip which links to our learning in history! We have also combined our learning about
being safe online to write a persuasive report to encourage others how to stay safe.
In reading, we have read ‘The Queen’s Nose’ by Dick King- Smith which has inspired some of us to
read other books written by him which we have borrowed from the library. We are currently reading
‘Young, Gifted and Black’ which is full of inspiring stories about real life icons.
We really enjoyed our DT week, where we learnt about healthy foods, comparing shop bought foods
with homemade ones. Over the week, we practised our skills in peeling, chopping, grating and
kneading by making pizzas, bread and soup. We particularly enjoyed tasting our creations. Some of
us have been inspired to cook at home too.

At the moment we are learning about life in Britain in Anglo-Saxon times. We have enjoyed learning
new vocabulary, including heptarchy. In science, we have been learning about living things.

Wow, what a busy and fun half term we have had in Year 4. It started with an interesting history topic where we developed our knowledge about the Ancient Egyptians. To finish our learning we took part in an Egyptian day led by an expert. We had so much fun!
In our DT lessons we focused on healthy, home made food. We learnt to how to make pizzas from scratch, bread rolls and vegetable soup. We all enjoyed tasting our creations. Hopefully we can share these skills and recipes at home! In our writing lessons we have used our Science learning about the topic of sound to write our own explanation texts. After learning about Sikhism, we visited the local Gurdwara in order to build on our knowledge of this special place of worship. |

Summer 1st 2023Another exciting half term in year 4 crammed full of learning and experiences!
In Geography, we have been learning about rivers which along with ‘The Big Help Out’ has inspired us to go litter picking along the banks of the River Gipping. Despite it being a very wet day, we bravely persevered and managed to collect several bin bags full of rubbish. We all enjoyed cleaning our environment using litter pickers which we were lent by the council. Using this experience, we are now writing our own news reports about this event. |

Last Tuesday, we were lucky to have Kinetic Science visit us. Each class had a great time exploring states of matter through a carousel of activities. We particularly enjoyed making non-newtonian fluid [cornflower and water] and discovering that it can be a solid and a liquid.
As a culmination of 12 weeks rehearsing with Wooden Roots, we had a fantastic time sharing our learning with parents at Dance East where the children could perform at a professional venue. They were amazing! Photos will follow shortly. |
Spring 2nd 2023
Year 4 have had a very busy half term with their learning. One of the highlights has been our weekly sessions with Wooden Roots where we have had opportunities to learn more about African culture, play different African drums and dance to rhythms. Our sessions will continue after the Easter holidays and culminate in a performance at Dance East on Monday May 22nd. More details about this to follow.

In Geography, we have been looking at The Water Cycle and discovering whether we might be drinking the same water that the dinosaurs drank! As well as this, we have been locating destinations in the world by using latitude and longitude.
We have recently enjoyed writing stories from a different culture and used our prior knowledge about the Romans to help us set our story in Pompeii in Italy.
Through our maths lessons, we have continued to practice our times tables as well as learning about fractions. After Easter, we will be developing our understanding of decimals.

As part of our DT project, we investigated structures and how different shapes can affect stability and strength. As a class, we worked together to design and create a structure to sit under and walk through using triangles. We had great fun!

It has been a very busy half term in year 4 as we become more familiar with our new curriculum!

In Writing, we have enjoyed looking at poetry, including haikus and cinquains and have also explored a poem by Lewis Carroll called ‘Brother and Sister’ which explores an argument between siblings! Earlier in the term we wrote persuasive adverts to encourage people to be safe online. A selection of these can be seen in our year 4 area.

In history, we have started learning about the Vikings and why they invaded Britain. After half- term we will be continuing with this topic.
As geographers, we have been learning about location, including latitude and longitude and climate zones. We have enjoyed using the online game ‘word wall’ to help support our learning. |
In Science, we have been learning about living things, including characteristics and how to classify them. Our last lesson involved as in thinking about how humans have affected ecosystems and what we can do to prevent further destruction of our planet.

As part of our DT project, we made a hook for a
tea towel by improving our sewing skills. We explored the advantages and disadvantages of different fasteners and chose buttons to secure our hook. We were fortunate to have the help and support from quite a few parents and relations. Thanks goes to all those who helped with this. The pupils were proud of their results. |

In our PSHE lessons, we have been thinking about our ‘Dreams and Goals’. We have created a tree in our year 4 area to display these. Our ambitions include working with animals, teaching and being professional sports people.
In PE, we have been practising our squash skills as well as our hockey techniques in outdoor lessons.

For our apprenticeship morning last Thursday, the children met the group ‘Wooden Roots’ who are
an African percussion and drumming group. They have made drums for the Black Panther movies.
Year 4 are very lucky to be working with them every Thursday morning starting after half term for a
12-week period. During these sessions they will learning how to play drums as well as dance. There
will be an opportunity for you to see what they have learnt in May. More information to follow.
