Year 3

Welcome to Year 3 2023 - 24

In Year 3, your teachers are:
Ms P. Whitmore
Mrs Hardy
Mrs Haighton
Mrs Howes
Support staff are:
Mrs O. Clark
Mrs G. Prevett
Mrs K. Pead

Autumn 1st

The children have settled so well and have been working really hard. We have been learning all about Rocks in Science and the children really enjoyed searching through soil, testing rock samples and discovering fossils. This has then linked into our writing sessions where we have been writing reports all about different rock types.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed making different types of boxes in Design and Technology. We have looked at how to stiffen fabric so that we could make different types of box and we made 3 in total. It was a very good test of the children’s resilience as some of the techniques were quite tricky!
In reading, we have been reading Pebble in my Pocket and this has again linked to our learning on rocks.
We have just started to learn all about the Stone Age which the children have found really interesting. We will continue to learn about this after half term in the lead up to our trip in November.
The children have loved visiting Broomhill library and hopefully all now should have a library card.

Read on to find out about what our Year 3 achieved last year:

Summer 2nd 2023

It is hard to believe that the children are nearly at the end of their year 3 journey - what another busy half term it has been and all of the year 3 staff are very proud of everything the children have achieved and how much they have matured.

This half term has seen the children write some excellent stories based on their knowledge of the Romans as well as learning all about OS maps in Geography. We walked in the local area  and used some fieldwork skills such as map reading and compass directions.
In RE, we visited the local church, All Saints and we received a very warm welcome. This was to fit in with our learning about the Christian faith.

In DT, the children have been learning about structures and in particular, bridges. They learned all about the different types of bridges and were challenged to design and build a bascule bridge (ask your child what these are!) Thank you for all of your kind donations of cardboard and as you can see, these were put to good use!

We have been lucky enough to have weekly visits to Broomhill library and the children have really enjoyed doing something out of the classroom. They can all now scan out and return their own books and love using their library cards - especially the date stamp!!
Please continue to support the library if you can, over the summer holidays as they always have a summer reading challenge for children to get involved in!
We wish you a very happy summer and thank you for your support over the year.

Summer 1st 2023

We kicked off our new Roman topic with a visit from Portals of the Past who delivered a fantastic educational visit. The children came dressed accordingly and it was great to see so many children take advantage of the opportunity to make their costumes in school with Mrs Lockwood.
In DT, we have made some containers using paper and cloth that the children made stiffer with PVA glue-it was quite tricky but the children persevered! We used this process to create our own instruction texts in our writing sessions.
In PE we have been learning how to throw in the athletics unit and learning the skills of cricket also.
We are currently learning how to tell the time in Maths. Some children are finding this quite tricky but they are showing great resilience! In Science, we are learning about plants and how they grow and thrive and in art we have been printing. The children have loved printing using rollers and experimenting with creating different marks and printing over different classroom objects!

Spring term 2nd 2023

This half term, we have revisited our Rocks and Soils science unit and used this to help us write
reports in our writing lesson. We also used our knowledge to create PowerPoint presentations on
the same topic. It has also been great to see and hear about children using their ICT skills and
continue to practise using PowerPoint at home.

We have been fortunate enough to have Sam Moss this term working with us in PE. Sam is a trained
dancer and has danced professionally in many parts of the world. She has worked with each class
weekly and this is feeding in to our curriculum enhancement sessions where we are working towards
achieving our Arts Award. This is a nationally recognised award with a focus on promoting the arts.
In this term’s DT, we have been learning about mechanisms and in particular, levers. The children
worked hard at making moving pictures.

Spring term 1st 2023

It has been a busy half term in year 3 as children become more familiar with their new curriculum.
A highlight for the children during the last week has been Design and Technology. We have been learning about healthy versions of well known snacks. We have learned about seasonal foods and why it is better for the environment to eat food in season but also how seasonal fruit can be preserved.
We made healthy versions of corner yoghurts, chips and popcorn. The children loved creating different flavour combinations!
In Geography, we have been learning about the United Kingdom and what countries make up the UK. We have looked at the physical and human features in each country and looked at how maps come in different scales and can be used for different purposes.

Our second module has been Science where we have been learning about rocks and soils. We have learnt that there are 3 different types of rock and that soil is made up of different layers. We sieved soil to see what we could discover and we tested for the mineral calcium carbonate in rocks by adding drops of acid (vinegar) to the surface of different rocks. If the vinegar fizzed and bubbled, calcium carbonate was present in the rock.

In art, the children have created mono-printing blocks and used these to print onto their collages. We then painted our favourite place onto fabric in order to make our own versions of quilts in the style of the the artist Faith Ringgold.

The Autumn term so far...

All of the children have settled brilliantly into their new classes and have adapted well to their new school routines. Below are a few helpful reminders:
  • Children are expected to read at home at least four times a week in order to achieve their reading targets. Children can read to an adult, with an adult or independently. The children quiz regularly in school to show that they have understood the books they have read.
  • TTRS homework is to play the games set in the Garage section. Other sections, including Numbots, can also be played but these do not count towards their homework.
  • Spelling shed homework is to play 10 games a week.
