Reading for Pleasure
At Springfield Junior School, we’re dedicated to helping every child discover the joy of reading. Research shows that when children read regularly and enjoy it, they make fantastic progress in their learning. Even more importantly, reading for pleasure boosts confidence, sparks imagination, and brings social and emotional benefits that last a lifetime.
Every child has the chance to choose books to read at school and to take home, whether from our extensive library or classroom reading areas. We also set age-appropriate expectations for reading at home, and we use reading records and the Accelerated Reader programme to help us celebrate and track children’s progress. Throughout the year, we run lots of fun initiatives to keep reading exciting and enjoyable. In addition, termly reading for pleasure newsletters will be shared with each class and an electronic copy sent home. Past newsletters can be accessed at the bottom of this page.
How you can help at home
Here are some simple ways to support your child’s reading:
-
Aim for at least 4 short reading sessions a week (10–15 minutes is perfect) — daily if possible! Record reading in the reading record.
-
Encourage your child to take a quiz when they finish a book, using the link on the homework page.
-
Chat about the books they’re reading — what they like, what surprises them, or what they think might happen next.
-
Ask gentle questions when they read aloud to help build understanding.
-
Share reading together: read aloud to your child, or enjoy a book side by side.
-
Tell them about stories you loved when you were their age.
-
Explore your local library or bookshop together — it’s a great adventure!
Stuck for what to read?
If your child isn’t sure what book to pick next, don’t worry — that’s normal! Here are some ideas:
Have a look at a range of recommended book lists. https://www.booksfortopics.com/ or
Follow Suffolk Community Libraries as they regularly share recommended book lists: https://suffolkcommunitylibraries.co.uk/borrow/recommendations/
Finally, thank you so much for the time and encouragement you give at home. The difference it makes to children’s reading journeys, and their enjoyment is enormous. We couldn’t do it without you!
