In year 3 we have had a busy start to the new term. We began with a trip to Avid climbing centre where the children tried their hand at bouldering. This is climbing without ropes and harnesses and helped to kick start our topic on Mountains. Although some of the children felt apprehensive, all left with smiles on their faces after conquering their fears and it was an excellent activity for them to try. Our topic continues and the children are familiar with features of a mountain and can name mountain ranges around the world.
Our science topic is healthy eating and teeth and we have been fortunate to have Mrs Rice come in to talk to the children about why we have teeth, how our teeth are different to animals and the importance of good oral hygiene. She informed us of the high sugar content of many of our regular snacks and drinks and your child will be able to tell you all about a dental acid attack and how to avoid them! We will be announcing the date of our next tea afternoon shortly.

Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed their squash taster session this afternoon, particularly enjoying the competitive element of the games as you can see below!
On Wednesday 11th December, Year 3 performed their exciting production, Lights, Camel, Action. This tells the story of the nativity through a strictly style dance competition and was jam packed with singing, dancing and comedy. The children performed enthusiastically and battled through their end of term fatigue to put on a brilliant show. Well done to all Year 3 pupils and to all of the staff for making this performance possible.
We had a very busy first term in Year 3 so far and the children have done very well settling into their new school. During the first week, we had our Egyptian Day. We dressed up in costumes and learned lots about Egyptian pharaohs, artefacts, hunting and mummification.
We went on a trip to the Wolsey Theatre to see children’s author Jon Agee speaking about his books. He showed us lots of amazing drawings and told us some fantastic stories. He even then came into the school to run a special workshop with 3P! We have also managed to go on a short trip to Ipswich Museum to see the Ancient Egyptian exhibition. Seeing real sarcophaguses and canopic jars was amazing! In school we have done some fascinating learning in DT and Science. We learned about forces and investigated toy cars moving down ramps. From this we began designing and building our own toy cars that would travel down a ramp successfully. We learned lots of new skills and enjoyed being creative! Creative CurriculumYear 3 had a fantastically productive Spring term that began with our topic on Mountains. We introduced this with a trip to Avid climbing centre which has recently opened in Ipswich. The children had a brilliant time with many overcoming and conquering their fears. Every single child had a go and it was enjoyed by all. The topic culminated with some model making and we all enjoyed impressing everyone with our knowledge of mountain features. Our next topic was all about weather around the world. We were lucky enough to have the meteorologist Chris Bell in to speak with every class about his journey to becoming a meteorologist and the children loved hearing about his storm chasing adventures in America. He can occasionally be seen presenting the local weather forecast on BBC Look East! Storytelling WeekAll children in year 3 were given the opportunity to learn a story after being inspired by the storyteller, John Harris. We created a class story map and children went home and learned the story by heart in preparation for their story telling performance to the rest of the class. The year 3 winner was Mia Garnham. Congratulations Mia! ScienceIn science, the children learned about 'Rocks' and their formation. To help them understand this, we made igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks using chocolate! We have also learned all about 'Light' and we investigated how to change the shape of shadows. To enable this, the children used some design and technology sessions to create a puppet theatre. We look forward to another successful term!
The year three classes have made a brilliant start to their new school year in a whole new school environment. We kicked off the year with a visit from the fantastic Mark, from Horrible Histories fame and he delivered a fun but extremely informative insight into what life was like in Ancient Egypt. The children looked amazing in their costumes and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for all their support as they really looked the part.
On the day itself, Mark bought in many of his artefacts to share with the children and they all listened carefully and asked lots of interesting questions. In one classroom, the children had a go at playing an ancient board game called Hounds & Jackals, which as they found out, has lots of similarities to both Snakes & Ladders and Ludo, and in another classroom we had our own museum. The highlight of the day was most certainly the afternoon session where the children and Mark re-enacted a Pharaoh’s mummification and there were plenty of gruesome moments for the children to enjoy! In English, we are writing our own adventure stories based on the story of The Iron Man, by Ted Hughes. To link in with this, the children will be working on an Iron Man themed dance that will be showcased in our Tea Afternoon. All of the children have started choosing reading and library books and have begun using Accelerated Reader to quiz on their books. Please ensure your children read as often as possible to support their reading-it really is vital. As well as this, children now have a Times Table Rock star login and will get homework to complete online. |
